middle ear infections (called otitis media) is an acute inflammation of the middle ear, causing severe pain and conductive hearing loss. it is common in children and there are many factors contributing to the cause of middle ear infections including viral and bacterial infections, upper respiratory infections, restrictions from birth trauma (use of forceps) and dysfunction of the temporal bones which blocks fluid drainage.
osteopathy looks at issues holistically and the body as a whole, and with middle ear infections, the lymphatic and musculoskeletal systems are examined. dysfunction in the ribs, spine and head can restrict the correct movement of the internal ear system and needs to be released with osteopathic techniques, which are not invasive. the lymphatic system is also worked on to allow proper drainage from the neck and head to improve blood flow and promote healing and repair. an osteopath’s goal is to improve the function of all the different systems in the body so that everything works at its best. and the added benefit of seeing an osteopath is your child avoids medication, surgery and any resulting trauma. furthermore, osteopathy can affect many different systems in the body including the body’s natural healing mechanism, the immune system!
